Modern AU - Detectives and Crime Lords
Mar. 12th, 2015 06:38 pmFlicking through the files one last time, she snapped the last one closed and slid into crisp motion before heading for the door. The case files were done, the meeting about the larger crime syndicate, or say they were calling it, was long over. If her partner insisted on sitting at his desk and doing unneeded paperwork until three in the morning, she would let him. Midnight was pushing it too far. Haldir simply didn’t know when to quit. The captain simply smiled at her as she left and lifted his shoulders in a shrug from his desk. Part of her wondered if he would be there much longer as she sent him a slight smile and nod in return.
Looking back over her shoulder she called out to Haldir who did not stop writing. "Some day you should think about going home. I'm sure your brothers will start to worry eventually." A brow arched as she waited for the man to reply.
"My brothers will live if I don't get a bit of sleep. Try not to get into trouble again." Haldir paused just a moment to look at her, a meaningful look on his face. "And stop being careless."
Ithil smirked at him, then shook her head moving away. "See you in the morning, Haldir."
Of all the precincts, their captain cared a great deal. It made it easier for the detectives to work as hard as they did. Her partner made head detective about the time Bard had been moved into their little corner of the city. They had a high rate of cases closing in their favor. All in their favor but the ones that dealt with the ‘crime syndicate’ lead by one man and his family. They kept them busy in a horrible cat and mouse scenario that made Haldir want to break pencils and shoot the targets until they were no long more than shreds of paper.
Ithil for her part, found it amusing. A challenge demanding her attention. But unlike her partner, she knew when to turn out the light and go home for much needed sleep. Or, in this case… much needed alcohol to help work out the stress of the Commissioner laying into them during that meeting.
So stepping into the little pub a few blocks down was as normal as breathing for her. She went there often and the barkeep knew her name and grinned as she walked in the door. Sliding onto the barstool off to a corner, she smiled as he pushed a drink her way. Nodding her thanks, she let herself let go and for just a moment forget all the feelings of tension and always watching her back so relentlessly while on duty. Not that it was safe… most knew her and especially her partner. They knew her captain… that made Ithil more a target than she acted to be.
She simply chose not to be afraid.
